Pleasure is the medicine.
I know how that sounds coming from someone who makes honey and chocolate. But stay with me - it's the simplest, truest thing I know about feeling well, and it's a big part of why Céleste exists.
I'm Nana DeFranco, founder of Céleste, a sensual wellness brand in the West Village, New York. We make Élixir d'Extase, a raw honey infused with botanicals, and Chocolat de Joie, a vegan kanna chocolate made with Deer Jade. I believe in mindful indulgence: pleasure, taken slowly and with attention, belongs at the heart of everyday wellness.
Why Pleasure Belongs in Wellness
Somewhere along the way, a lot of us picked up the idea that feeling well has to feel hard. That wellness means restriction. That the body is a problem to solve with tracking, discipline, and an ever-shorter list of things we're allowed to enjoy.
Notice the words we use. We "cheat" on a diet. We "earn" dessert. We call a workout "punishment."
And here we are - optimized and exhausted, tracking everything and feeling very little. The morning routine is perfected, and still we can't remember the last time a meal made us close our eyes.
Something essential got lost. Céleste is here to help us find it again - to remember our natural state of play, joy, and wonder.
What Your Nervous System Knows About Pleasure
This isn't only poetry. Your nervous system has two broad modes.
One is often called rest and digest. It's where digestion, rest, and repair do their quiet work, and it's invited in by safety, ease, and satisfaction.
The other is fight or flight. It's called up by stress, by restriction, and by the constant low-grade tug-of-war of denying yourself what you want.
So when you eat something exquisite with your full attention and zero guilt, you're eating the way your body was built to - at rest, unhurried, present.
Your body was never meant to live in a state of denial.
The science of pleasure echoes what so many of us already feel in our bones: deprivation is the real obstacle, and setting it down is the first act of real care.
Desire as a Compass
Céleste began with an intuitive ping. Sensual wellness.
She grew out of a year of breakthrough, 2022 into 2023, when I turned to potent botanicals to revive the parts of me that had been drained by people, places, and the life events we all go through from time to time. Instead of turning to harder substances, I looked for ways to shift my state by turning up my senses.
Coming back to my sparkle.
To me, Céleste is her own entity. She has a spirit, and I simply work with her. Her mission is to bring people back to their senses - not through force, but through invitation and play.
And desire, I believe, is a compass. I mean the oldest kind - the body's own intelligence. The craving for sweetness, as old as we are. The longing for warmth and richness, for something that melts slowly and sends a wave of satisfaction through the chest.
I think of these longings as signals, little notes from the body about what it needs. And when you really listen to the quiet voice underneath all the noise, what it asks for is quality - richness, something real, something that honors the body it's entering.
Mindful Indulgence and the Ceremony of Enough
Here's a little secret: when you let yourself fully feel a pleasure, you often need less of it.
Two teaspoons of Élixir d'Extase, melting slowly on the tongue, eyes closed.
Two pieces of Chocolat de Joie, left to melt until every note of bitter and sweet has had its say.
You stop because you're satisfied. The moment feels so complete that more would be beside the point.
That's mindful indulgence. It's a third way, somewhere between denying yourself and eating on autopilot - the one where ritual turns eating into ceremony, and pleasure becomes a kind of prayer.
If you've ever watched someone close their eyes over something delicious, you know the moment. The shoulders drop. The breath deepens. Something that was bracing lets go. That's what satisfaction looks like.
What We Made, and Why
Everything we make at Céleste starts with one question: will this make the body feel honored? Honored the way you'd honor a temple - with beauty, with intention, and with the understanding that what we take in matters, physically and energetically.
We made Élixir d'Extase because people have been steeping herbs in honey for thousands of years, and we wanted to carry that forward with raw honey from a regenerative farm in Upstate New York.
We made Chocolat de Joie with Deer Jade because people have held cacao sacred for millennia, and to me, it's still a portal.
Both carry plant allies with long histories of use. They're invitations, really - to slow down, to close your eyes, to let something melt on your tongue and feel, in your body, that pleasure and wellness were always meant to share a room.
A gentle note on safety. Both contain kanna, which acts on serotonin, so please don't combine them with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, or any other serotonergic medication. If you take prescription medication of any kind, ask your doctor first, and skip them if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. Pleasure belongs beside your medical care, never in place of it.
You Don't Have to Earn Feeling Good
If there's one thing I'd love you to carry from this letter, it's this: you don't have to earn the right to feel good. You never did. Wherever that idea came from, you're allowed to set it down.
No guilt. No punishment. Nothing to earn.
Take the spoonful. Light the candle. Run the bath. Let it be your way of meeting this wild, wise, longing body with a little sweetness at the end of the day.
This is the Céleste frequency - a way of moving through the world where pleasure is sacred, guilt gets to soften, and the kindest thing you do for yourself today might also be the most beautiful.
An Invitation
On one of the early nights of a retreat, I was serving Élixir d'Extase during a DJ set. Later, I sent a prayer out and drew the Célestial eye in the sand, and a rain followed.
We pulled a tarp over the equipment, held it up, and kept dancing.
That's the spirit I wish for all of us - meeting whatever comes with pleasure & play.
So join me -
In slowing down long enough to really taste things.
In letting pleasure be part of how you care for yourself.
And in moving through life with more joy, ease, and wonder.
From my heart to yours, Nana ✨
